MEDIA: Information and Entertainment in Poland

NO LONGER UNDER STATE CONTROL, Polish print media are increasingly diverse. While some papers offer consistent, predictable opinions about current events, the greater array enables readers to choose. As investment restrictions have been relaxed, foreign consortia now own many publications. Dozens of women’s magazines have emerged and are growing; the most popular magazines and newspapers cover home and fashion rather than politics. But broadcast media are another story – politicians realize how powerful the television image is, and as broadcasting is being privatized, they are struggling to control its content.
