WOMEN: Changing Roles: Practical Concerns and Political Protest

ON 13 JULY, THE UKRAINIAN PARLIAMENT held an unprecedented hearing on the status of women in Ukraine in anticipation of the United Nations Conference on the Status of Women/ World Forum on Women scheduled for September in Beijing. The organizers of the hearings wanted to assess the extent to which the provisions of the United Nations Document to End Discrimination of Women – signed by Soviet Ukraine after the Nairobi Conference in 1985 – are being realized.
