SINCE BELARUS GAINED INDEPENdence, the number of officially registered publications in the country has jumped from some 200 to more than 800. Despite the circulation of more newspapers, magazines, and journals, however, freedom of the press has not increased. Most publications are state-controlled, and the state is increasingly censoring the press. In addition, the government often interferes in the country’s small independent media. An even more worrisome development is the government’s move toward indoctrination.
