MEDIA: On the Front Lines in Tajikistan

SINCE PRESIDENT IMOMALI RAKHMONOV came to power in November 1992, Tajikistan has become a minefield for the media. Government control over information has become increasingly strict, and Tajikistan has been named one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. To date, since the civil war began in 1992, a total of 35 journalists have been killed or are missing – some died while covering the war, and others were assassinated.
