MEDIA: Uzbek Media Remain Restricted and Devoid of Criticism

THE ALMOST FOUR YEARS OF INDEPENdence in Uzbekistan have seen many changes. The economy is privatizing. The country is shifting its focus, both economically and culturally, toward Asia. Most important, symbols of an Uzbek heritage are replacing symbols from the Soviet past. However, those changes pale in comparison with the sense of sameness that characterizes the current Uzbek state.
