THE INDEPENDENT BALTIC MEDIA HAVE fought aggressively and more successfully than their former Soviet peers. The influence of state-owned radio stations has declined; Russian-language media have decreased radically; and many new television stations and newspapers have emerged. Most newspapers are now privately owned, although they have significantly smaller circulations than their state-controlled predecessors and are dependent on advertising revenue.
