HARASSMENT OF ROMANIAN intellectuals by members of the country's various secret services has aroused fears that the notorious Securitate, the political police of the communist era, is back in a new disguise. Two incidents in particular, much discussed in the Romanian press, looked like attempts to intimidate the political opposition. The public is becoming increasingly aware of the number of secret services currently operating in Romania - and beginning to wonder what exactly they are doing, and in whose name.
