IN THE 1980S, LONG BEFORE SLOVENIA secured its independence, the then-Yugoslav republic's media began to evolve as an influential opposition force unafraid of criticizing governmental authority. Among those at the forefront of the movement was the now-independent youth weekly Mladina, first published in 1943. The journal became a leading opponent of Yugoslav authorities and policies, as did the youth weeklies Tribuna and Katedra.
