INDEPENDENT MEDIA FACE DIFFICULT conditions in the rump Yugoslavia today, with the government controlling many news organizations. In addition to the omnipresent state-run radio and television, there are some 50 local television stations, but they are capable only of reaching tiny audiences. There are far more local radio stations - an estimated 2,000, with about 50 percent of them tied into the government's radio broadcast system. The existence of radio and television stations that are not bound completely by government control does not mean that such outlets are entirely outside the government's sphere of influence, however.
