WHEN THE SOVIET UNION DISSOLVED, the People's Republic of China quickly recognized the independent status of the former Soviet republics and established diplomatic relations with them. While its immediate neighbors - Russia and the Central Asian republics - were a priority, Beijing did not neglect the western republics. For China, those countries were only of limited economic importance but were geopolitically significant.
