THE PART OF RUSSIA THAT FACES JAPAN IS called in Russian dalnii vostok, which means "far east." A stretch of Japanese coast on the opposite side of the Sea of Japan traditionally bears the Japanese name omote-no Nihon, which means "Japan's backyard." Whether both countries can turn around and finally face each other is an open question.
